Divenire - Einaudi
The music of composer/pianist Ludovico Einaudi has been described
as minimalist, classical, ambient, contemporary and deeply touching - the
welcome sound of stillness in a hectic world. With 'Divenire', Einaudi uses
full orchestra and Ipod loops in addition to the piano. It is intense, melancholy,
reflective and beautiful. A long time in the making, the title track, 'Divenire'
- 'Becoming,' track 6 'Primavera' and the final track 'Svanire' were commissioned
by 'I Suoni delle Dolomiti' festival in 2002.
Einaudi's music has always been considered both accessible and credible. 'Divenire' continues musical themes from previous recordings as well as new sounds and ideas. Following a recent successful UK tour, Einaudi is currently back in his native Italy with a number of dates.

Beat the Retreat - Songs by Shawn Colvin
Originally released in 1994 and re-issued at the end of 2006, this perhaps
represents the best album ever released in the much maligned "tribute"
category. Thompson is a national treasure and ranks alongside Costello as
an insightful and articulate songwriter, and the fact that he is also one
of our best-ever guitar players assures his place in music history. Perhaps
also the fact that he has largely plied his trade in an area sloppily tagged
"folk" has meant he has remained un-discovered by many.
But now that artists such as Seth Lakeman, Kate Rusby and nu-folk artists
like Davendra Baernhart along with bands like Tunngg and Thirteenth Day
of May have wrestled the term from 'finger in the ear, woolly-jumpered yoghurt
knitters', it is now acceptable to admit to liking folk music!!
A near-perfect 16 tracks (only the majestic Beeswing is absent) and an eclectic
mix of artists ensure that the album is a treat from beginning to end.
Los Angeles punk veterans X start the proceedings with an imperious take
on "Shoot out the lights", REM follow up with a sublime version
of "Wall of death". Slide ace Bonnie Raitt turns in a storming
"When the spell is Broken" and Shawn Colvin and Loudon Wainwright
III weigh in with a heartbreaking "A heart needs a home". Add
in tracks from Los Lobos, June Tabor, David Byrne, Graham Parker and Dinosaur
Jr, among others, and you have a classic set befitting the artistry and
talent of Thompson.
