AVR100 RECEIVER

AVR100 Design Details

AVR100 Technical Specifications

The advent of DVD has boosted sales of AV receivers and whilst many of these do a reasonable job of reproducing surround sound from movie soundtracks, they can be bitterly disappointing when it comes to reproducing high quality music sources. The Arcam AVR100 has been designed to deliver on both movies and music and is an excellent match to the DV88 Plus DVD player.

The best home cinema soundtracks demand a system that can accurately reproduce the scale of an orchestra in full flight, along with the gentlest whisper of dialogue. The Arcam receiver contains all that you need to decode and amplify these surround sound signals and forms the heart of a high performance, easy to use, home cinema system.

AVR100 Receiver

The Arcam AVR100 surround sound receiver features Dolby Digital and DTS as well as Dolby Pro Logic decoding and high quality composite and S-Video switching on four video sources. The FM/AM tuner section includes RDS and allows you to store up to 30 favourite stations on FM and 10 on AM. A stylish and fully-featured remote control is included, which also operates the main functions of the Arcam DV88 Plus DVD player.

A massive toroidal transformer is at the heart of the AVR100's superior performance on music. This massive power supply, and the use of audiophile quality components at critical points in the signal path, together give a demonstratively better sound on music sources than other AV receivers at comparable prices. Tone control circuits are included along with a direct button which by-passes these for optimum sound quality. The AVR100 is capable of delivering 70 watts to all five channels and will deliver around 90 watts per channel when used in stereo.

There is plenty of opportunity to upgrade the system's performance in the future. For example, the AVR100 has pre-amp outputs for use with matching Arcam power amplifiers such as the P85. It also includes a 5 channel input for use with multi-channel audio sources such as DVD-Audio. Most of the AVR100's functions can be accessed from the included Arcam remote control handset, which conveniently also provides the basic controls for use with Arcam's CD and DVD players.

AVR100 RECEIVER - DESIGN DETAILS

Arcam has been active in the home cinema market for many years. The Arcam Xeta One was one of the first serious home cinema amplifiers from a specialist audio manufacturer to hit the market. More recently we have enjoyed considerable success with the DAVE (Digital Audio Video Entertainment) system for the Alpha and FMJ product ranges.

The massive growth in DVD has fuelled demand for AV receivers, but unfortunately most of these are extremely disappointing on music. Arcam's customers told us they wanted an affordable AV product which would offer all the convenience of a receiver and which would really play music properly. The result is the Arcam AVR100, a dedicated AV receiver that delivers the kind of sound quality on music that people have come to expect from Arcam.

A massive power supply with a custom built 550VA toroidal transformer gives the power amplifier section an extremely solid and controlled sound. The use of audiophile grade components in critical signal paths ensures that music is reproduced with subtlety and precision. A bypass switch for the tone control circuits further simplifies the stereo signal path and, when activated, gives a surprising improvement in sound quality.

The AVR 100 is rated at 70 watts per channel in five channel mode and will deliver more than 90 watts per channel when used in stereo mode. Speaker impedance is selectable between 8 ohms and 4-6 ohms. Six 2 channel audio inputs are provided, along with a direct 6 channel input for connection to multi-channel analogue audio sources such as DVD-Audio. There are three digital inputs connected to a powerful 24 bit digital signal processor and six 24 bit DACs for decoding Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital and DTS encoded material. Video routing, complete with on screen graphics, is available for up to four composite and s-video sources.

The AVR100 also features pre- amplifier output sockets. These are ideal for further upgrading the system's sonic performance with external Arcam power amplifiers, either for extra power in a large room or by bi-amping the front channels with suitable bi-wireable speakers. The AVR 100 comes complete with a sensitive RDS tuner; offering a total of 30 FM and 10 AM presets, this is a fine performer which complements the amplifier section perfectly.
