Marconi 100th aniversary stamp 1995 marked the 100th anniversary of the invention of "wireless telegraphy", or to use it's more popular name, radio. The first radio broadcasts were made by the pioneering engineer and scientist, Marconi in 1895. His first trans-Atlantic test transmissions, in Morse code, were made from a rudimentary transmitter at Chelmsford, in Essex.

Progress thereafter was rapid and with the world's first radio station, the British Broadcasting Corporation's 2LO service, going on air in 1922 a new form of listening entertainment had arrived.

Instead of just one service covering everything, today there are a plethora of dedicated stations providing a range of quality speech and music services. As well as top quality stereo FM transmitters, there are a number of specialised stations operating on the old "medium wave", or AM, frequencies. The arrival of Digital Radio has brought a number of new services, including additional live sports coverage and live broadcasts from the House of Commons.

Arcam has a range of tuners to suit our Hi-Fi systems which allow you to make the most of the wide choice of services now being broadcast. Terrestrial broadcasting is still growing with the introduction of Regional FM licences, Community Radio and, of course, ever-expanding numbers of Local and National radio stations to choose from. Provided that you invest in a good quality external antenna, your choice of radio listening has never been wider.

Whatever your favourite listening, whether it be comedy, music, news, drama, chat shows or current affairs, there is an Arcam tuner to suit your requirements. And, remember, with Arcam's Hi Fi with a Future concept, our Alpha 7 tuner can be upgraded to an Alpha 8 tuner at a later stage for modest cost.
